Thanks to everyone who came and took part in the discussions yesterday. I read every single comment posted yesterday and came away the richer for it. Yes, even the anonymous ones! What a terrific reminder of how diverse and rich our world is from a discussion on such an important issue. I feel enriched and invigorated and I am welcome to the challenge of changing the world, at least in my own house. And so I thank you all for being part of a greater good.
And in keeping with the theme of our discussions, I'd like to leave you with this excellent Dove film:

Hey Ello!
Good for you for garnering so many readers and commenters yesterday!!! You were a hit. Thanks for doing it.

Thank you so much for organizing yesterday's event!
And thanks again to Dr. Durham!
Hey Ello,
Wonderful discussion! Thanks for hosting, and for giving me a new must read book - just what my ever building tbr pile needs.
That's a great video and so true. None of the people on the covers of our magazines look like the people on the covers of our magazines, if you know what I mean.
Oh No!!! I'm sooo sorry, Ello, I completely forgot. And I so wanted to be there. Things have been a bit rough here and my mind is very much otherwise occupied. Off to read the post and comments now.
An amazing, and important, discussion, Ello! Thank you so much for taking the lead to organize it. You and Dr. Durham gave us all a lot to ponder.
And that's a great video.
thank you both, ello and dr.d, for the topic and the discussion... seems there's a long, tough road ahead, for parents especially, but for society as a whole, too...
the video link does not work for me :(
Excellent work, Ello!!
ok, video worked this time, quite the transformation... good thing this ol wuff was 'beautiful' from day one, or so the ladies used to say! :O lol
Love love Dove. It's a campaign long needed which will hopefully be long-lived.
Ach. Came too late to participate in the discussion, but I did see the comments, questions, and responses. This was a rather spirited discussion.
I would have asked Dr. Durham if she had examined the possibility of cultural martialization as a whole, or if she's aware of any studies that would either indicate or refute this. For if this were true, then you would could expect a redefinition of male and female roles that both emphasizes differences between genders, but also gives a rationale for the male privledge to act aggressively.
But of course, I didn't ask the question. Great discussion, though, and great way for Dr. Durham to reach potential readers. I would hope that we could see more of this sort of thing around the blogosphere.
Kudos to you both.
Kudos and thanks to you, Ello, for hosting this fabulous discussion. I've been talking about it with my 16 yr old. More to come!
Shoot, if she'd just taken a bath and brushed out her hair she'd have been prettier at the beginning.
Wow, I loved that video! I wish Dove didn't make me break out, or I'd buy it just because of their great marketing the past couple years.
The conversation was awesome yesterday. By the time I got there, I had nothing to add that hadn't been said, but ... WOW! Great post, great interview, great comments, great discussion.
One I hope continues in our society.
Great discussion, Ello.
My girls and I found those Dove films a couple of months ago and have watched them countless times together. They've made a tremendous impression on both girls; the youngest actually burst into tears at the one of all the little girls who felt negative about the way they looked.
I LOVE that Dove film and their mission to reestablish healthy self-esteem in our girls.
Thanks for the great conversation of the other day!
Hi Ello- that was really interesting. I love a good, vigorous discussion about a topic that matters like this one does!
Also wanna know - can we link to each other? I didn't want to do that without asking.
Hi, sweetie.
You're now linked on mine.
Hope you're having a Happy Sunday!
This one is much more life-life and realistic...and yet it makes me sad too :(
